Flamboyant all-rounder Yuvraj Singh on Monday emerged as the costliest cricketer in the IPL 8 players’ auction, bought for a record Rs 16 crore (USD 2.57 million approx) by Delhi Daredevils.

ipl Yuvraj Singh Bid

Yuvraj Singh, who carried a base price of Rs 2 crore, was sold for the highest ever price in IPL history after a fierce tug of war for his services between Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore, who bought him last year for Rs 14 crore, at a glitzy auction at a city hotel here.
However, it was quite a surprise to see Yuvraj going past his last year’s price as he has been out of the Indian team for some time.

Initially, there was a four-way bidding among Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers, Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils to buy India’s 2011 World Cup hero in the auction conducted by Richard Madley. But once the bidding reached Rs 7 crore, RR and KXIP quit, leaving DD and RCB in the fray.

Delhi Daredevils, who have the largest purse of Rs 39.75 crore among all the eight franchises taking part in the auction, also bought Sri Lankan captain and all-rounder Angelo Mathews for Rs 7.5 crore, the third highest price in the first two rounds of the auction.

RCB, who lost to DD in their bid to get Yuvraj and Mathews, bought wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Karthik for Rs 10.5 crore, the second highest price, even though it was Rs 1.5 crore lower than the amount he was bought for by DD last year.

Surprisingly, former England captain Kevin Pietersen, who was bought for Rs 9 crore last year by DD, could get just Rs 2 crore as he was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad at the base price.

Other players sold in the auction were India Test opener Murali Vijay for Rs 3 crore (to KXIP), leg-spinner Amit Mishra (Rs 3.5 crore by DD), Aaron Finch (Rs 3.2 crore by Mumbai Indians), Eoin Morgan (Rs 1.5 crore by MI) and Kane Williamson (Rs 60 lakh by SRH).

Sri Lankans Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara and South African Hashim Amla went unsold in the first two rounds for marquee players which was attended by Nita Ambani, Ricky Ponting, Anil Kumble, V V S Laxman, Muttiah Muralitharan, Rahul Dravid, Gary Kirsten, Stephen Fleming, Vijay Mallya and Preity Zinta among others.

Sri Lanka’s chairman of selectors Sanath Jayasuriya has said that the hastily-arranged five-match ODI series in India, to be held in early next month, will help the fringe players prove their worth before next year’s World Cup.

After the West Indian players abruptly pulled out of their tour of India last Friday over pay disputes, Sri Lanka Cricket accepted India’s invitation to play a five-match series from November 1.

“This is an ideal opportunity for some of the bowlers who have been around to grab their chance by performing against a top team like India,” Jayasuriya was quoted as saying in a leading cricket website. “These players have been in the system for some time and thrown into the deep end we can see how they cope with the pressures,” he added.

Three Sri Lankan seam bowlers have been recuperating from injuries. While Lasith Malinga is recovering from surgery on his ankle, Suranga Lakmal has just started rehabilitation work after a stress fracture to his ankle sustained during the South Africa series in July. Thisara Perera is recovering from a hamstring injury he picked up during the Champions League Twenty20 last month.

“Malinga has already begun rehabilitation work, and with 16 weeks left for the World Cup, we are hopeful he will be fit. Perera is not training at present,” said the former Sri Lanka skipper.

He has been a calming influence for India in the opening slot, proof of which was visible during his half-century knock in the fourth ODI against West Indies, but consistency is something Ajinkya Rahane is striving for to cement his place in the national team.
Opening the batting, Rahane scored a stroke-filled 68 off 79 balls and was on course for a century before his innings was cut short by Sulieman Benn in the fourth ODI.
But Virat Kohli smashed 127 off 114 balls and together with Suresh Raina (71) stitched 138 runs for the third wicket to set up a 59-run win for India on Friday.
Asked Rahane to judge his progression as a batsman, the Mumbai cricketer said his main focus is now to convert starts into big scores.
“I have always tried my best to improve certain aspects of my game and pick certain bits and pieces from practice sessions and the matches that I play. From the previous tours till now I have realised that consistency will be an important factor. I have often got starts for the team but not been able to convert them into big ones.

Following his return to form in the abruptly-ended West Indies series, Indian batsman Virat Kohli claimed the number two slot in the ICC rankings while swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar broke into the top-10 for the first time in his career.

Kohli scored 191 runs, including 127 in the final match, in India’s 2-1 series win as he pushed South Africa’s Hashim Amla to number three in the list topped by Amla’s compatriot AB de Villiers.

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the next best Indian batsman at number six (unchanged) while Shikhar Dhawan fell a rung to go eighth. Left-handed Suresh Raina gained three places to move to 15th.

Bhuvneshwar took only two wickets in the series but jumped seven places to number seven, just behind Ravindra Jadeja, who slipped a spot to sixth.

India paceman Mohammed Shami, who ended the series as the most successful bowler with 10 for 174, vaulted five places to 16th, broking into the top 20 for the first time in his career.

Injury-prone all-rounder Shane Watson has been named in Australia’s 13-man squad for Twenty20 matches against South Africa next month as he recovers from a calf strain.

The 33-year-old was ruled out of a One-Day International tournament against South Africa and Zimbabwe in August and September after he hurt an ankle stepping on a ball.

A subsequent calf injury then forced him out of the current tour of the United Arab Emirates where Australia won a one-off T20 match against Pakistan and swept them 3-0 in a one-day series ahead of two Tests starting in Dubai on Oct. 22.

“Shane Watson also returns from injury and we certainly know the destruction he is capable of causing in this format of the game,” selector Rod Marsh said in a statement upon the release of the squad on Monday.

Melbourne, Oct 8: Sri Lankan spin legend Muttaiah Muralitharan will not be playing in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) Twenty20 this year and also the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2015 as he wants to focus on his coaching commitments. According to BBL tournament’s official website, the 42-year-old Muralitharan was quoted as saying that he will concentrate on coaching. He is currently with the Australian team as a spin coach.

“I signed for three years with the Kolkata (Bengal) state team and I’m doing about 30 days of work in a year,” Muralitharan said. “I was supposed to play in the Caribbean league. I gave it up. I told the Big Bash League I’m not coming and also the IPL – I’ve advised them I’m not going to be available. “My future plans are just to help spinners all around the world. That’s the role I’m going to play,” he added. Muralitharan played past two seasons for Melbourne Renegades in BBL and took 19 wickets in 16 matches. Earlier this year, Muralitharan was bought by IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for Rs 1 crore. He played five matches this year for the Bangalore team.
